Our classroom motto is "Time flies when you are having fun!"
Every day we try and make learning fun and experience lessons through whole group, small group, pair or individual work. We use manipulatives, read-aloud books, and many other resources to make our learning come alive! We strive to connect our learning beyond our classroom walls by making connections to ourselves, our community, and other educational resources!
Weekly Specials Schedule:
Monday Music with Mrs. Wheeler (Bring in recorders and folders)
Tuesday P.E. with Mr. Vuono (Wear appropriate clothes and shoes)
Wednesday Health with Mr. Vuono
Thursday Art with Mrs. Berstrom
Friday Library with Mrs. Scanlon (Remember to bring your library books!)
This year in third grade is unique because the students are switching between Mrs. Devereaux and I for their core subjects! We both teach ELA (Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling) to our homeroom classes. We switch for Science and Math; I teach Science to both classes and Mrs. Devereaux teaches Math to both. This adjustment will be new to all the students, but we look forward to the opportunity to get to know all the students in third grade and for them to get to know both of us!
Language Arts:
Beginning this year, grades 2-5 are implementing a new ELA curriculum called Wit and Wisdom. All teachers received training this summer with the program which is comprehensive of reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and speaking/listening standards. There are four modules for each grade level with varying information and fiction texts and art work is also included. Our goal is to complete all four modules by the end of the school year. With anything new, things can seem messy at times, but we are trying our best to personalize the learning for all the students in our classroom! With any specific content questions about these topics, please contact me!
Science:
Captain Isaac Paine school has our science program funded by GEMSNET which allows us to teach science in a interactive and very inclusive way. Typically, the science schedule runs in a rotation of: experiment, science writing, experiment, science writing, and science literature. I am eager to teach all of the third grade students the three science kits this school year. The order in which the kits are taught is not known yet, but they will include "Water". "Motion and Matter", and "Structures of Life"
Math:
Welcome to third grade math! Mrs. Devereaux has worked to make this year in math one in which the students will learn new concepts, but doing it in a fun and hands-on way. To begin the year, the students learn how to solve multiplication and division equations in a variety of ways. Fact fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is a major component in the third grade. It is important for the students to be practicing at home and at school.
To reassure the mastery of fluency, the students participate in a math fluency program. The students should come to third grade knowing their basic addition and subtraction facts. As we learn multiplication and the strategies in solving those problems, the students will be assessed in their fluency by answering 10 problems. They will first be assessed in the 0x, 1x, and 2x facts before moving onto more challenging multiplication and, eventually, division facts. Third grade students will not receive a "4" on their report card in fluency without the constant practice at home and school!
